Twice per year the BCIT Business Operations Management Program in cooperation with our Industry Partners places teams of students into those organizations to work on real world process improvement projects. These are very much like the CSI shows you see on TV. A “crime scene” (business issue) is investigated using operations management forensic tools, “key suspects” are identified and those with alibis are eliminated leading to the final “arrest and sentencing” of the real cause of the issue.

Join us on the evening of Wednesday March 29th for a look inside an actual CSI warehouse operations improvement project as Annie Luu, Chris Jensen and Peter Cheema, three BCIT Business Operations Management CSI Technicians in training, profile their Fall 2016 project which was conducted at Deere-Hitachi Specialty Products in Langley.

Annie, Chris and Peter will walk us though the steps that they took including:

  • Initial investigation of symptoms and agreement on scope (Terms of Reference)
  • Understanding the current process (Process Mapping)
  • Data gathering (Space Utilization, Lean Assessment and Cycle Time Analysis)
  • Investigation of Alternatives (space and productivity related)
  • Selection of recommendations (storage methods, processing and standardization)
  • Development of Implementation Plans
  • Presentation of action plans

Annie, Chris and Peter will profile how they applied operations management CSI tools learned in the classroom to “the real world” and how you can use the same techniques to improve your operations, or, if you prefer, how you can engage BCIT students to do similar projects at your facility.

For a preview of their presentation which profiles the expected operational improvement results and client testimonial please read their Project Synopsis Report which follows.
